When asked how they would like to meet their end, there is one answer that is quietly becoming more common these days: the wish to be buried among trees and grass rather than beneath a fancy tombstone. Even in Ontario, there are places that accommodate this wish. Natural Burial (Green Burial)We are gradually expanding our presence.

What is the method of natural burial?

According to consumer guidelines from the Ontario Bereavement Administration (BAO), Ontario's funeral and burial regulatory body, a green burial refers to a method of interment where an unembalmed body is placed in a biodegradable coffin or shroud and buried in the natural ground without concrete vaults. The burial site resembles a natural landscape with trees and wildflowers rather than rows of grass and headstones. Markers are often small local stones or communal rocks inscribed with names, and locations are accurately managed using records and GPS.

Good to know

  • In Ontario, remains must be interred in a licensed cemetery. Burial on your own land is not permitted unless the land itself is authorized as a cemetery, and scattering of cremated remains is permitted on royal land or private property with the owner's permission.
  • With the increasing number of 'hybrid' cemeteries that feature separate natural burial zones within traditional cemeteries, there are cases where one can choose a natural burial close to their family grave.
  • Costs vary significantly depending on the region and cemetery, but due to the simple caskets and markers, they are listed as approximately $3,000 to $8,000 depending on the source. Since the sale price of a cemetery plot includes a contribution to the Care & Maintenance Fund for permanent maintenance, please be sure to check the price list and bylaws before signing a contract.
  • Not all cemeteries have natural burial zones. When researching in advance, the BAO consumer information guide and guidance from Canadian natural burial organizations are helpful.

There is no single right way to do this. However, saying "This is how I want to be remembered" at least once while you are alive reduces the time your family spends questioning and hesitating during the most difficult days. Quietly reflecting on the path back to nature may also be a warm way to put one's life in order.
