TitleChanging Address After Moving, Where Do I Start? — Ontario Deadlines and Checklist Summary2026-10-13 08:42

Q. I recently moved within Ontario, and I'm at a loss as to where to start with changing my address. Is there a time limit for some of these changes?

A. Yes, Ontario driver's licenses and vehicle registrations have short deadlines, so it is best to handle them first thing after moving. For the rest, you can reduce the chances of missing anything by creating a checklist and crossing items off one by one.

1. Check the expiration date first — ServiceOntario

· Driver's license: From the date the address changed Within 6 daysYou must change it. The new license will be sent by mail.
· Vehicle Permit: Also Within 6 daysEven after changing your address online, there are cases where you must visit a ServiceOntario center to exchange it for a permit with your new address.
· Health Card (Health Insurance Card): Within 30 daysChange to. For card types where the address is not displayed, a new card will not be issued, and only the record may be updated.

With ServiceOntario's address change service, you can apply for driver's licenses, vehicles, and health cards all at once. There are no fees, and records are updated immediately. Please include any Ontario Photocards in your application.

2. Make sure to take care of federal agencies separately as well.

Federal records do not automatically update simply by changing your provincial government. You can update your address with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) via My Account or by submitting Address/Phone Number Change Form RC325. Please verify this immediately after moving to ensure that tax documents and benefit notifications are not sent to your old address. If you are in the process of filing for immigration, you also need to verify your address with IRCC separately.

3. Mail transfer is an auxiliary means.

If you apply for Canada Post Mail Forwarding, you can receive mail at your new address for a certain period, but parcels and prepaid envelopes are not included, and the sending agency's records themselves are not changed. Please use this service to inform the agency of your new address directly whenever forwarded mail arrives.

4. Lifestyle Checklist

Check your banks, credit card companies, and insurance companies (especially auto insurance rates can be affected by your place of residence), as well as telecommunications, internet, utilities such as electricity, gas, and water, your workplace payroll, your children's schools and daycare, and even your addresses for subscriptions and deliveries. If you are moving out of a rental home, it is also helpful to leave your landlord a new address where you can receive mail.

Since it is a busy time for moving itself, it will be much easier if you plan to finish the time-limited driver's license/vehicle (6 days) and health card (30 days) first, and complete the rest within two weeks.
