When you first settle in Canada, the most frustrating moment is when you can't communicate. From hospital registration and school documents to government office counters and shop signs—in such situations, having just one proper free translation app installed on your phone makes life much easier. A prime example of a free app is Google Translate. It is available for free on both Android and iPhone, and there are no ads or in-app purchases.

A feature particularly useful in immigrant life

· Text translation: Translates input sentences between over 100 languages. Supports Korean↔English as well as French (an official language of Canada).
· Camera Translation: When you point your phone camera at signs, documents, or product descriptions, the translation appears immediately overlaid on the screen. This is the most convenient feature when you cannot type the text manually.
· Photo translation: You can also import and translate photos of documents or letters that you have already taken.
· Conversation Mode: This is a two-way conversation feature that translates speech into each other's languages as two people take turns speaking. It is very useful for counseling in hospitals or schools.
· Voice and Handwriting Input: You can input text by speaking or by drawing characters in your handwriting.
· Offline Translation: If you download the language pack in advance, translations will work even in places without internet access. I recommend downloading the Korean and English packs at home where Wi-Fi is available.

Setup order

1. Install Google Translate from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
2. When running for the first time, select the primary language (Korean) and frequently used languages (English or French).
3. Download the language pack in a Wi-Fi environment to enable offline translation.
4. You can save frequently used phrases (addresses, allergies, names of medications, etc.) to favorites (stars) so you can retrieve them immediately when you are in a hurry.

Points to note

While translation apps are sufficient for everyday conversation, you must use official translation or professional interpretation for documents where precise expression is important, such as legal, medical, or contractual documents.
· Supported features vary by language. Some languages do not support camera translation or offline translation, so please check the support status of your frequently used languages within the app.
· When translating photos of documents containing personal information, it is advisable to keep in mind that the translation results may be transmitted to a server.

Language barriers are one of the biggest stresses during the early stages of settling in. Simply mastering one free tool can make visiting hospitals, schools, and government offices much less daunting.
