In observance of Fire Prevention Week from October 4 to 10, the Burlington Fire Department has provided guidance on preventing lithium-ion battery fires. These batteries, widely used in mobile phones, laptops, electric bicycles, and power tools, can overheat and lead to rapidly spreading fires if damaged or charged incorrectly, making proper charging habits important.

  • When buying: Choose products from reliable manufacturers and sellers, and check for safety certification marks.
  • When charging: Use a manufacturer-approved charger, charge on a hard, flat surface rather than soft ones like beds or sofas, and keep away from flammable materials. It is best to avoid charging overnight.
  • When using: Stop using the battery immediately if it overheats, swells, smells strange, makes a hissing sound, or emits smoke.
  • When discarding: Do not put rechargeable batteries in general waste or recycling bins. There is a risk of fire during the collection and disposal process.
  • Alarm check: Install smoke detectors on every floor and outside of sleeping areas, test them regularly, and replace them every 10 years. Starting in 2026, homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, and attached garages must install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors on every floor and near sleeping areas.

Please take this opportunity to review whether you have established an evacuation plan that the whole family is aware of.
