The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has released guidance for travelers entering Canada ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday on October 6. As the Monday of the holiday is considered the busiest day at borders, it may be helpful to check wait times and arrival hall operating hours before departure and to travel early in the morning.

  • Prepare your travel documents, such as your passport, in advance, and declare all items you bring with you. For items purchased overseas, it is advisable to keep the Canadian dollar equivalent and receipts.
  • Homemade food or leftovers containing poultry cannot be brought into Canada, so please check the restrictions on U.S. poultry in advance.
  • When entering by plane, you can make customs and immigration declarations in advance at participating airports up to 72 hours prior via Advance Declaration.
  • When traveling with another person's child, please prepare a consent form from a parent or legal guardian.
  • Even though cannabis is legal in Canada, bringing it across the border without permission can result in criminal penalties.

CBSA advised that it is safest to ask a border officer first if you are unsure whether to report.
