When a note-taking app switches to a paid subscription or expires, it is common to worry about the records you have accumulated. Joplin is a free, open-source note and to-do app that alleviates such concerns. Its key features include the ability to save your notes to your device first and the option to choose your own synchronization method.
What kind of app is it?
Joplin is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as Android and iOS. Notes are saved in Markdown format, organized into notebooks (folders) and tags, and can be quickly found using a full search. Notes remain on your device even without an internet connection, allowing you to view and edit them at any time.
Synchronization and security
You can choose from various services for synchronization, including Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, WebDAV, and Joplin Cloud. If you enable End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) during synchronization, you can protect your notes so that even cloud providers cannot read them. However, please note that recovery may be difficult if you lose your encryption password, so please write it down in a safe place.
Convenient features
- To-do notes, notifications, and checkbox management
- Save webpages and screenshots as notes with Web Clipper for Chrome and Firefox
- Import ENEX and Markdown files exported from Evernote
- Extend functionality with plugins and themes, check note revision history (revisions)
You can use the app's basic features for free without using Joplin Cloud, a paid cloud storage service. I recommend starting lightly by creating just 3 to 4 notebooks, and then setting up synchronization and encryption sequentially once you become familiar with the app. When downloading from the official site, please verify the address first to ensure it is not a fake download site.
