Ahead of the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday (Monday, October 12), the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) released guidelines for travelers crossing the border on October 6. If you are planning to visit the United States, checking the following points in advance will make the immigration process smoother.

  • Prepare travel documents in advance: Please be prepared to present documents such as your passport immediately, and declare all items you are bringing without omission. When entering the country by vehicle, you are responsible for all items inside the car.
  • Keep receipts for shopping items: For items purchased overseas, please check the Canadian dollar equivalent and keep the receipt ready. Customs duties and taxes are exempt only within the personal duty-free allowance.
  • Caution regarding poultry and leftovers: You cannot bring raw poultry, by-products such as turkey, or home-cooked meals or leftovers containing poultry into Canada, so please check local U.S. restrictions first.
  • Check waiting times, early morning is better: Mondays during the holiday period tend to be the busiest. It is recommended to check border wait times before departure and travel early in the morning if possible.
  • Cannabis and weapons are prohibited: Even though cannabis is legal in Canada, bringing it across the border without permission can result in criminal penalties, and as a general rule, firearms and weapons should not be brought in.

When traveling with a child who is not your biological child, it is helpful to prepare a consent form from a parent or legal guardian. It is safest not to hide items you are unsure about, but to ask the immigration officer first.
