Starting October 1st, the minimum wage in Ontario will increase and be immediately reflected in your paycheck. Here is a summary of the key points.
- General Minimum Wage: $17.60 per hour → $17.95 (35-cent increase). This was announced by the state government on April 1, reflecting a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 1.91 TP3T, and applies to more than 700,000 workers in the state. Based on a 40-hour workweek, the annual increase is approximately 1 TP4T728, but since this is a pre-tax amount, the actual take-home pay will be lower.
- Student Minimum Wage: $16.60 → $16.90. This applies only to those under the age of 18 who work 28 hours or less per week during the semester or work during school breaks or summer vacation. Since you must receive the standard minimum wage after your 18th birthday, please be sure to check your pay stubs around your birthday.
- Homeworker: $19.35 → $19.70. This applies to employees working from home for an employer, and this rate takes precedence over the student rate regardless of age.
- The new rate Until September 30, 2027 It is valid. If the payroll cycle spans between September 30 and October 1, two different rates may be mixed within a single cycle, so it is safer to check the first October payslip.
